I guess what I don't understand is why the "path back is a no no", as you
put it here. Slothrop, in contemplating the alternative possibilities that
were available at the time the New World was settled and comparing them to
the "cleared ... depolarized" space of "the Zone" immediately after the War
here, wonders if there is a "route back", by which I take it he means a
route back to that precise moment when the choice between a set or sets of
alternatives were available (as when the Founding Fathers were setting up
their colonies in the New World way back when), one such alternative being
W. Slothrop's compassionate and egalitarian model of Christianity: "without
elect, without preterite, without even nationality ot fuck it up. . . . "
