Also, Musil wrote "Young Torless" (missing, of course, an umlaut).  It
is the story of Torless at boarding school.  Torless looses his faith,
discovers torture, and sex sort of, enjoys lots of nice shame, etc. The
usual. 

Poor persecuted Paul Reubens, the actor/comic who's best known
character is Pee Wee Herman, might well be an excellent choice for the
role of Torless. 

Now, everybody, was Torless a self-portrait by Musil? I've no earthly
idea.
