Dave Monroe:
Everything is silent and white. Like Gottfried in the 00000
rocket, Pym voyages into mystery. The "Other Kingdom" to
which Gottfried tends, as we shall see, at his death and at
every coupling with Blicero, sounds unmistakably polar: "He
approached
the gates inside, expressionless beasts frozen white" ([GR,]
p. 722).
Pym's story, which Poe pretends he has been constrained...
Polar, right. White, but again, here I think the allusion is
also religious, the white and frosty beings are out of
Gershom Scholem's Major Trends, and also the all male
sphere, vacuum, these gymnastics are also from Rilke.
Again, see Chapter 62 of M&D, Stig, the broken light and
magic...
That is an interesting image, the V with inverted world, a
Pynchon favorite.
