----------
(155) Perhaps history this century, thought Eigenvalue, is rippled with
gathers in its fabric such that if we are situated, as Stencil seemed to be,
at the bottom of a fold, it's impossible to determine warp, woof or pattern
anywhere else.
----------

Wrinkled fabric could be likened to a wavy surface. To ride the crest (not
to mention the tunnel) of the wave is what we'd all like. It would mean
mastery, control. The crest is the apogee of the wave. But waves crash.

This imagery resonates with GR parabola in which it's hidden corollary below
the visible is strongly implied. Above and below the visible on a wavy
surface is a buffeted condition. Below the surface, under the sea, would be
more protected from the wind, but orbit from a position ABOVE the atmosphere
might offer a better possibility.
