If you don't know, Pacifica is, to my knowledge, the only U.S.
nationwide network of radio stations not under corporate or
government control; three of the stations have been strangled by a
Board that seeks to make programming more palatable to a mass
audience and thus betray the pacifist and free speech origins of this
organzation; KPFA in Berkeley and WBAI in New York are fighting back.
Sorry if these seems off topic to some of you, if I had time I'd
explain what I think this has to do with the way Pynchon depicts
media (film in GR, TV in Vineland, radio in COL49) representations of
society and such tend to the darker needs of Control.
from MediaChannel.org's Daily News at http://www.mediachannel.org/news/today/:
RADIO: WBAI Firings "Union Busting" Says Local Branch
Anchors Amy Goodman and Robert Knight have been fired from WBAI
radio, completing a purge of "Wake Up Call" staff which started with the
December sacking of host Bernard White and union shop-steward
Sharan Harper. WBAI's staff union, UE Local 404, has condemned
these moves as a "flagrant case of union busting." General Manager
Utrice Leid has installed security guards, banned on-air discussion of
station business and prohibited the public from entering the station for
listeners' comments at Local Advisory Board meetings. Staffers say a
climate of terror has been created at the station. However, Amy
Goodman remains presenter of the Pacifica network's "Democracy
Now!" program.
