When Benny's sheltered days beneath the street and within the mercy of Fina
are over Benny has to return to the "dream street (39)."
The "dream street" associates Disassembly with Death. To combine these two
is to associate the mechanical with the living. Benny's identification with
the inanimate is thus established. He wants to be (or dreads being) an
object, buffeted by the wind.
The Animate are only thus as long as their springs are still wound, the
switch is still on, so long as they still move.
But, so far, Man is incapable of Creation: He cannot bring life out of the
abyss. He has only proven himself to be an apt mechanic of the found parts.
Will he be more prudent than the billions of monkeys throwing their
wrenches into the machinery of Evolution?
