They bombed Darwin and got a two-man sub or two into Sydney Harbour. But
that's about it. The distances here too vast, the terrain too hostile ... it
would have gone the way of Napoleon's or Hitler's eastern campaigns had they
persevered with it. Japanese and Aust'n troops were still at pretty much of
a stand-off in the jungles of P-NG by war's end.
The irony is that the land and capital Japanese corporations have amassed
here through prudent investment and economic imperialism in the decades
since the war is far in excess of anything they would have gained through a
military campaign.
