Some of them were indeed prosperous, but if I recall my history lessons
correctly the paths of political power were closed to them. They were
perceived as outsiders whose civil rights were at the whim of whatever
country they resided in. It's a big question of course, but I would say
in balance what they had was taken away not lost.
(Compare the "Turks" in Germany today: Resident for generations -- by
invitation, even -- but still without civil rights.)
