The texts of the Bible says that the Israelites were never anywhere near 
G_D's voice.  They were fornicating at the foot of the mountain, building a 
Golden Calf.  Only Moses was allowed to get close end recieve the carved 
stone tablets.  Even here the medium is not auditory but writing.  Writing 
last longer, especially when on stone.
