Glad to see Reynolds is still getting paid to spout orotund bluster;
although he doesn't seem to have quite the license to rhapsody he had
when
writing about The Young Gods and MBV in Melody Maker ten years or so
back.

For a collision between some of the music Reynolds likes with V., how
about this --

Matmos: California Rhinoplasty
Matmos are a duo from San Francisco obsessed with sampling sounds from
unusual sources, and they’ve been in the Rhinoplasty clinics of
California gathering material for this latest single. MC Schmidt plays
nose flute and nose-job samples, while Drew Daniel constructs a
percussion track from osteotomy, or the breaking of nasal bones for
facial re-structuring.

                   CD: Matador OLE 501-2

Nose flute, indeed. Acutally it's strangely melodic, although I mention
it mainly for curiosity value. (This quote is taken from a bbc R3 Mixing
It playlist for anyone that cares.) And I see they have an album due out
shortly called A Chance To Cut. What japesters.

Also, this may well have been recommended before (perhaps by Romeo), but
do try and watch Tarkovsky's S t a l k e r if you can -- lots of Zone
craziness and any number of other Pynchon references for those seeking
them (and what happens where nothing is connected to Pynchon, surely a
condition some of us couldn't bear for long?!). A taster from the movie:

"Well naturally they started to guard the Zone like a treasure, for who
knows what desires a person might have?"

The movie is dancing around the schedules on FilmFour currently, for
anyone with access.
