On Pynchon and Kabbalism:

There could have been a number of ways that Pynchon could have gotten
into
Kabbalism prior to Bloom.

One of Bloom's colleagues at Yale, Jack Burnham, wrote a series of
articles on
Duchamp and Kabbalism in _Arts Magazine_ and _Artforum_ from 1971-3, and
some
citations (out of memory) before. Bloom's interest is contemporaneous
if not after
Burnham, who eventually completed a full-length manuscript in the late
70's which I
read at the time, due to his friendship with my mentor at the time,
Michael Peter
Cain, co-founder (with Patrick Clancy now at Kansas City Art Museum) of
the
technological and environmental art cooperative Pulsa (1967-71).

If you notice, the most prominent passages on kabbalah in GR are linked
to a
character named Marcel the robot chessplayer.
