Your sense is congruent with my own. I've often wondered how much in
royalties Pynchon, the man, has collected for GR- a considerable amount, I
would imagine. Given the confusion created by his work, over some very
serious shit, as exemplified by the turmoil on this list, it all makes me
wonder if he doesn't actually traffic in confusion and human misery. Always
a risk, I guess, for taking on "weighty" themes.
