On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the occasion
of his last televised address to the nation to warn of the dangers
inherent in the development of "undue influence" by the
"military-industrial complex." Forty years later, important elements
of
Eisenhower's speech still ring true. Despite the fact that the U.S.
military budget is already over $300 billion per year and the threats
to
U.S. security have diminished substantially since the end of the Cold
War, a coalition of Pentagon officials, arms industry lobbyists, and
conservative members of Congress are aggressively pressing the case
for
a $100 billion increase in military spending and a massive "Star Wars
II" missile defense program. After viewing a video presentation of
Eisenhower's original speech, a panel of experts will discuss what
motivated Eisenhower's famous warning, and whether it remains relevant
to today's debates on military spending and policy.
Wednesday, January 17th, 2001, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Tishman Auditorium, 66 W. 12th St.
(between 5th and 6th Avenues)
Admission: $10
RSVP 212-229-5808, ext. 101 or dover at newschool.edu
Note: This panel is dedicated to Lars-Erik Nelson, the late, great
columnist with the New York Daily News who was an insightful,
well-informed critic of the follies of Pentagon spending.
