Count me among those who are tired (beyond tired, really) with the personal
attacks emanating from Millison & Jackson.
For what it's worth, my opinion of J & M (I'm not playing favorites here, I
swear!) only descends the more that their personal attacks continue. I
realize that's merely one davemarc's opinion, but I figured I'd take this
opportunity to chime in with those who are trying to get the message across
that the personal attacks are a pure nuisance if not an utter embarassment.
If the Pynchon-related disagreements must continue, I'd prefer to see them
take place without the personal attacks. There's a point where you can just
"agree to disagree"--perhaps that point was reached months ago. If you can
avoid the personal jibes and not-so-subtle digs, avoid them. Let your
arguments stand or fall on their merits only. And have the good sense to
walk away from some issues where you've already expressed yourselves and
you've got nothing to add. There's no need to convince everyone on the list
of the validity of every point you wish to make.
Positive reinforcement time: I truly appreciated the detente that prevailed
at the end of Y2K. Thanks for the hiatus--not for a second did I miss those
personal attacks!
Respectfully submitted,
d.
PS: Does anyone on this list actually like those personal attacks? If so,
I'd love to know why.
