Yes, I do believe Pynchon's a genius, agreeing with the many people
who suggested same so that he would be rewarded as such by the
MacArthur folks, and the people who keep him on the short list for
the Nobel Prize for literature, and the critics who can't find enough
superlatives with which to praise his works, and more than a few of
the people who take part in discussions of his works here and
elsewhere. Pynchon writes books of uncommon power and beauty, he has
profound insights into our times shared by no other writer, and I
find it just and fitting that he be recognized for the genius that he
is. That expressing this widely-shared affirmation of Pynchon's
artistic stature would be cause for insult on Pynchon-L continues to
amaze me. I'm sure I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate that
kind of thinking, and I'm not sure I would want to be. But if that's
what floats your boat, go for it.
