And he takes his new purpose to Below the Street.  This is the refuge of the
world's refuse, which Fr.Fairing snuck away to, himself being such.  So are, I
suppose, Benny and all the Alligator Patrol.  And like them, Fairing, despite
his supposed mission, was equally a hunter.  Despite his compassion for their
souls Fairing justifies his appetite as just payment for his spiritual
services.  Benny too develops some compassion for his prey, but in the end just
"does his duty."
