... well, okay, not Ken Burns' Jazz, which I haven't seen, and probably
won't see (although I did read quite a bit about it, and along similar
lines, in the Sunday New York Times), but I thought this might be of
interest ...

MacAdams, Lewis. The Birth of the Cool: Beat, Bebop and the
Birth of the American Avant-Garde. New York: Free Press, 2000.

... should have grabbed it, but Pynchon wasn't in the index, so I
excused myself the immediate expense and saw A Hard Day's Night again
instead. Richard is referring to ...

Finkestein, Norman G. The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on
the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering. New York: Verso, 2000.

... which I'd forgotten about, but will certainly look into, esp. as I
think I ordered a copy some time ago based on a Verso ad and it hasn't
apparently shown up yet. So I hope it'll prove interesting, let me know
...

Also realize that my last post of yesterday was cut off for some
reason. Was following up on Doug's recommendation of Nick Bromell's
Tomorrow Never Knows: Rock and Psychedelics in the 1960s (Chicago: U of
Chicago P, 2000), which I recall being tempted to excerpt here, just
wanted to note that ...

Hicks, Michael. Sixties Rock: Garage, Psychedelic, and
Other Satisfactions. Urbana: U of Illinois P, 2000.

... is now available in paperback. Charts its subject via detailed
analyses of various recordings of "Hey Joe," from The Leaves to Jimi
Hendrix and then some, before, between, and maybe even after. And,
Ivan, hey, if it's on the level, and you don't mind running the risk
with at least a year or so of your life, what the heck, go for it. Now
watch the local school board puzzle over a sudden proliferation of
applications ...
