Also notice the very great Robert Darnton mentioned here, perhaps his
Mesmerism and the End of the Enlightenment in France (Cambridge, MA:
Harvard UP, 1968) might be of interest here, not only as it's a damn good
book, but in re: all that table-tapping or whatever et al. across that
Pynchonian ouevre.  Maybe also his The Great Cat Massacre and Other
Episodes in French Cultural History (New York: Basic Books, 1984).  The
title essay will horrify cat-lovers (though there's a certain ridiculous
excess involved that borders on black humor), but, well, on that witch/cat
relationship ...
