It might be clearer to think of it as the Erie Canal flowing from the Great
Lakes to New York harbor via the Hudson and other waterways.
The Hudson has always been a major waterway. The Erie Canal raised its
importance (and New York's importance) to a much higher level. The rust
color might refer to visible effects of pollution; nowadays, the Hudson is
almost certainly cleaner though there are major pollution problems that
linger.
