Women "happen" to Profane, which is to say they are accidents which the
schlemiel would rather avoid, but can't. Women and agency, or lack of.

Profane feels his lot is with the wind. He wants Fina to treat him as an
"object of mercy." Objects are inanimate and have no will. This is
Profane's preferred state. Please release him from... what? From what does
he flee?

Things change for Benny after two events:
1) His epiphany in Fr. fairing's sepulcher.
2) His drunken date with Fina.

Both of these events bring Benny to a threshold of emotional commitment and
personal responsibility. Life and Death. Benny wants to remain an
inanimate object, thus he retreats back to the Street.
