Has anyone commented on the profound differences between the American and
British editions of Lempriere's Dictionary?

The English edition is over a hundred pages longer than the US edition. 
A friend of mine just told me about this recently.  He said that the
American editor thought the US reading public wouldn't go for the more
"far out" parts of the book, whatever that means.  I'd be very interested
to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of this.
