In her memoir Horak writes that it was the gypsy prisoners who were put in
charge of the other (women) prisoners at Auschwitz and who acted as work
group leaders etc (there was a special German name for their role, but I
have sent the book back to the publisher now and can't recall it: Horak
comments on their extreme cruelty and violence towards herself and other
Jewish prisoners). She also mentions that prostitutes were interred at
Auschwitz, which is something I hadn't realised before.
