I liked Brin's _Startide Rising_ in which humans are seen as unique in the 
wider galaxy as alone having no "history" of genetic "uprising," that is 
being patronised by the gift of sentience by an higher species.  Slavery for 
a thousand-plus years is that galaxy's tarrif for entry to these uprisen 
gods' realm.
