I wonder if that mention of a "diggers ass" in the last line of what is
apparently one of the letters (right at the bottom of the page) is a
reference to the derogatory label which the American settlers gave to their
West Coast Indian slaves in the 1870s and 1880s (after the Spanish and then
Mexicans had set up the slave missions in California). The Indian slaves
were called "diggers" apparently (I've been watching every minute of the
wonderful _500 Nations -- The Story of Native Americans_ series over the
past couple of months). But it certainly looks like a cranky-sounding
letter!
