A man has been threatened with jail for wearing shorts in court in Malta.

Simon Chircop turned up wearing shorts and a T-shirt for a traffic matter at
the court on the Mediterranean island.

Magistrate Carol Peralta said he was showing disrespect and fined him £38.
She said if he can't pay the shorts fine he will go to jail.

Chircop was also fined for driving without a valid licence, reports The
Malta Independent.

He told the bench he did not have enough money to pay the fine for wearing
shorts.

The magistrate told him: "If you don't pay the fine within the time
prescribed by law, you will go to prison to make up for it."
