Just as scary is the constant "chilling effect" on social debate
concerning controversial social issues. People are branded "perverts"
for being horrified at a case like the one described in the Bob Herbert
article brought to our attention by Doug, and fiends if they support the
legalization of drugs. There are even people who admit to smoking pot,
yet are against decriminalization. With the reported percentage of the
population that smokes pot, a chilling effect on social/political
discourse is the only explanation for the lack of debate on, let alone
repeal of these draconian laws that are applied to private activities.
