Pynchon claims to have read Santayana. He read  William
James, and Emerson, and I suspect he read Peirce, Dewey,
Royce. I don't think a single study has been able to claim
that P read Nietzsche. My guess is, that he has read
Nietzsche. When? Can't say. The sources for the
existentialism of the Short Stories and V. are easily
traced, but not to Nietzsche.
