I seem to recall (from a classics course I took in my undergrad days) that
the definition of genius has undergone a massive transformation since it was
coined by the Romans way back when. Back then, when the pater familias
toasted the emperor's genius, he was in effect celebrating his spirit
(whatever the hell that means). But nowadays genius is usually associated
with intelligence, education, and often times success; one's intellectual
capacity rather than their spirit. I don't know exactly how this fits into
our discussion of Pynchon but maybe someone else can figure that out for
me...
