Badly! It was remaindered after dismal reviews and sales, and
was hard to find until Meridian brought out a paperback in 1962.
So it was pretty much of an underground "cult" novel until about
the time _V._ was published.
Interestingly, the cult was centered around Greenwich Village,
where Jack Green and David Markson were perhaps the cult's most
vociferous spokesmen, and we know from Siegel's Playboy piece
that Pynchon hung out in the Village in those days. Lots of
circumstantial evidence both for and against TRP being acquainted
with the book...who knows?
