I've recently been re-reading Invisible Man and, although once again I'm
sure this has been discussed to death (but as Pyncon is not exactly a
current events section we can discuss it once more), the similirarities are
indeed striking...Compare:
"They wouldn't see you because they don't expect you to know anything, since
they believe they've taken care of that." This omnipotent/omniscient "they"
(in italics, not capitalized) are able to mold and manipulate men with no
identity...any parallels here? And, of course, the whole turning stupid
little pop ditties into something that is psychologically more
complex...Anyone know of any essays on this?
Anyway, seems like Ellison was deeply influential on Pynchon and his style.
