Mackin and calbert make good points. Pynchon may also have chosen Jackson's
school because it's close to home.
It's been suggested previously on Pynchon-L, however, that Pynchon's writing
reveals an author who is intent on exploding the so-called myths of
religion, an author who could never take seriously or admire or affirm the
tenets of institutionalized religions and who in his fiction has extended
himself to undermining religion. I don't think a person with that sort of
extreme hostility to organized religion would send his child to a
church-affiliated school, certainly not in NYC with so many alternatives,
even right there in Pynchon's immediate neighborhood.
