I'm plowing through Evan Connell's Deus Lo Volt!--a chronicle of the 
Crusades, which reads like nonfiction.  Connell, as he did in Son of the 
Morning Star, is a meticulous researcher, and this book captures the feel 
for those bloody times, without the condescending attitude displayed in much 
historical recreations of the past. It is humorless and slow going at times, 
but Connell's command of the material is pretty fab.
