Are you sure you're not short-circuiting The Damned
(1969) with Visconti's Death in Venice (1971), which
is of course based on a Thomas Mann novella, as well
as with Istvan Szabo's Mephisto (1981), adapted from a
Klaus "Son of Thomas" Mann novel and apparently
sharing certain elements with The Damned?  Of course,
all I know about Luchino Visconti I learned from Monty
Python's Flying Circus, so ...
