I intended cranky to mean eccentric, as did Pynchon in the first paragraph 
of
the essay itself.

Sorry Malign, but I have to disagree again. If you know the history it 
informs his use of the word. Moreover, P says,

To some already simplified points, further reductions were made, provoking 
certain remarks,
name-calling, even intemperate rejoinders, giving the whole affair, though 
attenuated by the mists
of time, a distinctly cranky look.

Clearly P means querulous, ill-tempered, factious.

That's why I thought that you were thinking of old peevish Humpty Dumpty.
