"By the cover of Le Soleil, the Orleanist morning paper, it was 24 July
1913." (V., Ch. 14, Sec. i, p. 393)
J. Kerry Grant's A Companion to V. (Athens: U of Georgia P, 2001) is helpful
up to a point here. "The Orleanists had long been the supporters of the
claims of the dukes of Orleans to the throne of France" (p. 171), and on
"Louis Philippe Robert, duc d'Orleans ... the current pretender," Grant
cites the Encyclopedia Brittanica Online ...
"The great grandson of King Louis-Philippe, Louis Philippe Robert
(1869-1926) became recognized by royalists as the rightful heir to the
French throne upon the death of his father in 1894."

Although note that Grant's citation differs somewhat from the text I've
hyperlinked (rewritten? But I've found multiple entries for other subjects,
so ...). I've not determined whteher or not Le Soleil was actually "the
Orleanist morning paper," but I've no reason to doubt Pynchon's research
here, with the added bonus of resonance with both "morning" (Le Soleil, "The
Sun," makes sense for a "morning paper" ...) and the time theme(s) I've
already addressed. But I've been hard pressed to find any particular
significance for 24 July 1913 (a Thursday, by the way), although these came
up, might be of interest to some here ...

And the Delaware state flag was adopted on that day. But if anyone has any
ideas, please ...
