Okay, blew off what might have been a productive day
to get all liquored up to benefit breast cancer
research (no, really), and then get in some of that
"sleep" that seems all the rage, only now realizing
that I left my research for the day, er, well,
somewhere ... so while I scramble to say a little
something about Ch. 14 for today, a couple of recent
acquisitions ...

Headrick, Daniel R. When Information Came of Age:
Technologies of Knowledge in the Age of Reason
and Revolution, 1700-1850. New York: Oxford UP,
   2000.

Taxonomy, chemistry, the metric system, surveys,
statistics, graphs, cartography, longitude, the arc of
the meridian, sictionaries, semaphore, postal
services, you name it. Bring on Mason & Dixon (who
aren't mentioned in the index, but Maskelyne is ...).
First thing I read when I finish of Ch. 14. And ...

Pountain, Dick and David Robins. Cool Rules:
Anatomy of an Attitude. London: Reaktion, 2000.

No index, and no Pynchon in the endnotes (Mailer, of
course, but also DeLillo), but looks interesting,
useful. Namechecks Peter Stearns, American Cool:
Constructing a Twentieth Century Emotional Style (NY:
NYU Press, 1994). Got a used copy over the internet,
mailing label from one Pamela Des Barres, Los Angeles
address, could it be ...?
