VV(18): Sirius

Forgot to mention, in addition to the specific Sirius reference, Ware gives
page reference for several references to "Dog Star" in his M&D web guide.

However else Sirius/Dog Star/dog days might work in M&D and V., I also group
it with a number of phenomena that Pynchon mentions -- stuff that's widely
known because of broad pop culture dissemination (cf. Otto's post about
seeing it on TV), to the point that they serve as touchpoints or even
tropes.  In a similar way, Pynchon uses the reference to the indigenous
people -- Senoi, I think they may be called -- who incorporate their dreams
into their daily lives, if I remember correctly Dixon speaks of this in M&D
but the reference is a tad hazy and I don't have my copy of the novel -- the
kind of cultural anthropology factoid that has broad currency but about
which nobody but a specialist can say much.
