"By cover of Le Soleil ... it was 24 July 1913" (p.
393), then "melanie ... was driven away ... in a noisy
auto-taxi" (p. 394) then "lit by uncertain August
daylight" (p. 395). Again, that's one long taxi ride,
IF that was the current ed. of "the Orleanist morning
paper" (p. 393, am assuming "morning" implies daily),
IF Pynchon is concerned here with realist chronology,
IF this wasn't a simple mistake. THAT'S the one that
nags at me ... but "The night of the performance
arrived" (p. 412), all that indicates is some time
elapsed, and one would expect some intervening
rehearsals et al. An August performance seems
perfectly reasonable, and August 6th fitting, in light
of ... but interesting to note the alteration of
"minor details" like that of that infamous premiere of
Le Sacre du printemps, when major ones have already
been altered. Reminds me of SF/Fantasy/Comic/whatever
fans who nitpick minror innacuracies whilst suspending
disbelief to such a great degree in the first place.
OPerhaps teh place to start in thinking about just how
such fictions work ... anyway, my first and only
chance to access today, distinctly NOT well (you lose
your tolerance when you only go out every coupla
weeks, rather than nightly, i've discovered), adn I
might not be able to get back to this 'til Monday now.
Still have a pile o' stuff on deck, esp. about that
riot. In the meantime, if Herr Foppl is still ready,
willling and able to cover Ch. 15, by all means, do
please go right ahead, as I might very well bleed over
a bit. Keep up the good work ...
