V.V. (19?) The "church key"

Doug, I believe the phrase comes from the old NYC breweries,
but I could be wrong about that. Anyway, long shore man and 
hard drinking, case-a-day-iron workers never went anywhere
w/o their church keys. They wore them hanging from their
belts. And  they left dead soldiers (empty beer bottles)
everywhere they stopped.
