Well said. Does not endorse, and does not oppose. Examines, presents, utilizes and plays with, though seriously and respectfully. This may sound banal, but religion is indeed an integral part of any society. Therefore, a writer like Pynchon would definitely be interested in it, whether he was a religious man himself or not.
I'd also like to say this: Only an American would write such novels. And America (well, in fact, all of Western Civilization) as we know it would simply not be if it weren't for Christianity. (OK, if I may say so, Ancient Greece also played some role.) So, it is no wonder that he's dealing primarily with this form of religion.
