FYI: how it works

1. "jbor" asks a relatively innocuous-sounding question or makes a
reasonably polite statement.
2. Interlocutor responds, on topic and in a civil tone.
3. "jbor" takes part of interlocutor's response, rewrites/ twists it
into something "jbor" can read as an attack, and responds in kind.
4. Interlocutor, understandably, questions "jbor's" rewrite and
asserts that interlocutor made no such attack, again in a civil tone.
5. "jbor"
"You are obviously offended by the fact
that I
have dared to try and discuss them with you, though I have no idea why
this
should be the case, so let's just forget it."
It's yet another tactic -- we've previously discussed "jbor's" red
herring and ad hominem attacks -- that "jbor" has used to stop many
a promising conversation on Pynchon-L these past couple of years.
