Nice post David. I'm also inclined to think that this intimacy with the
"Things in the Back Room" is all that separates Victoria from people like
Stencil or the Whole Sick Crew, who themselves exemplify the superficiality
and tourism-impulse which propels all those other travellers in the "Kingdom
of Death".
I think that the "Things in the Back Room" are the revelations of futility
which V. witnessed accidentally at first, back in Egypt, and then gradually
sought out, in Paris, Florence, Sudwest, and by having people like Godolphin
and Foppl reify for her what happened in Vheissu, the Sudan, and 1904.
