No, it is not obvious not self evident, but a number of
critics have confirmed it.
We will need to wait, because this is not clear until we get
to the end of the novel.
However, we can deal with Augustine and his Bishop Faustus
and Manichean and the Bad Priest. Thomas E. said that the
crucifix tattoo seemed a critique of Catholicism, but this
not correct. It is Manichaeism that P identifies with the
Darkness and this also the case in GR.
O'Donnell's web page is very helpful, but if you happen to
have any old Classics copy, Penguin or something.
