All of which reminds Monica of Kirilov in Dostoyevsky's " The Devils". 
Konstantin Mochulsky calls him the most "metaphysical" character in the 
Dostoyevskian bestiary; a bridge-engineer with lustreless eyes and a very 
particular gravitation to Being and Nothingness, to animation, inanimation, 
(the unsung dynamics of pre and postanimation?)...
