it's a teutonic thing you surely wouldn't understand ... no, just joking, 
basically this is a critique of the conservative character of the publishing 
house this newspaper gets published. the axel-springer-verlag was already 
attacked by the protest-movement back in the 60s when crazy axel springer, who 
was raised up not far away from the place i'm writing this, was the biggest 
"kommunistenfresser" ("commie-eater") around and also fired slanderous 
head-lines against the protesting students. in the meantime things have relaxed 
(for example, wolf biermann, a still somehow socialist singer and poet, is now 
"chefkulturkorrespondent" of "die welt", the springer-paper with the highest 
'ideological' profilation), but the publishing house's basic conservatism can 
still be perceived. the "hamburger abendblatt", however, is a cheesy local 
newspaper, which, nevertheless, gets read by many people who live in this city. 
not by me; in my wife's and mine private language the "abendblatt" (as people 
say here) is known as the "gurkenblatt" (about: dud paper). anyway, interesting 
issue.
