it's a teutonic thing you surely wouldn't understand ... no, just joking,
basically this is a critique of the conservative character of the publishing
house this newspaper gets published. the axel-springer-verlag was already
attacked by the protest-movement back in the 60s when crazy axel springer, who
was raised up not far away from the place i'm writing this, was the biggest
"kommunistenfresser" ("commie-eater") around and also fired slanderous
head-lines against the protesting students. in the meantime things have relaxed
(for example, wolf biermann, a still somehow socialist singer and poet, is now
"chefkulturkorrespondent" of "die welt", the springer-paper with the highest
'ideological' profilation), but the publishing house's basic conservatism can
still be perceived. the "hamburger abendblatt", however, is a cheesy local
newspaper, which, nevertheless, gets read by many people who live in this city.
not by me; in my wife's and mine private language the "abendblatt" (as people
say here) is known as the "gurkenblatt" (about: dud paper). anyway, interesting
issue.
