Saw that in the paper, very interesting. Iconoclasm
is one of those things I spent a little time on myself
in my English Renaissance days, do see ...

Gilman, Ernest B. Iconoclasm and Poetry
in the English Reformation: Down Went Dagon.
   Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1986.

Phillips, John R. The Reformation of Images:
Destruction of Art in England, 1535-1669.
   Berekeley: U of California P, 1973.

And here's a few recent titles that came up that I'm
not familiar with, but will apparently have to look
into now as well ...

Besancon, Alan. The Forbidden Image:
   An Intellectual History of Iconoclasm.
   Trans. Jane Marie Todd. Chicago:
   U of Chicago P, 2000.

Cable, Lana. Carnal Rhetoric: Milton's
Iconoclasm and the Poetics of Desire.
   Durham, NC: Duke UP, 1995.

Gamboni, Dario. The Destruction of Art:
Iconoclasm and Vandalism since the French
Revolution. New Haven, CT: Yale UP, 1997.

Gross, Kennneth. Spenserian Poetics:
   Idolatry, Iconoclasm and Magic.
   Ithaca, NY: Cornell UP, 1985.

Loewenstein, David. Milton and the Drama
   of History: Historical Vision, Iconoclasm
and the Literary Imagination. New York:
   Cambridge UP, 1990.

O'Connell, Michael. The Idolatrous Eye:
   Iconoclasm and Theater in Early-Modern
England. New York: Oxford UP, 1999.

Wandel, Lee Palmer. Voracious Idols and
   Violent Hands: Iconoclasm in Reformation
Zurich, Strasbourg, and Basel. New York:
   Cambridge UP, 1995.

But my understanding is that this Taliban iconoclasm
is a radical mutation for Islam, which, while it
doesn't promulgate iconology, doesn't have a history
of violent reaction to it, either. I do recall a film
about the life of Mohammed which never quite depicted
teh Prophet, but ...
