VV(11): A Mideast Crisis

Just to clarify. I'm not claiming that it's being
implied somehow that the April 19th, 1956 Egypt/Israel
"ceasefire" here is Pynchon somehow misdating the Suez
Crisis ceasefire. Obviously, given later references I
cited at the end of my post, Suez itself doesn't show
up 'til later in the novel. I just can't figure out
what this IS a reference to, is all. Some sort of
minor conflict is apparently flying under my radar
here. But I felt obligated to clear up just what this
"warning," that "ceasefire," wasn't likely referring
to. Am relying entirely on the Internet on this one,
which might have been my mistake here, but ...

> "David Ben-Gurion warned his country in an
> Independence Day speech that
> Egypt planned to slaughter Israel. A Mideast crisis
> had been growing since
> winter." (V., Ch. 8, Sec. iv, p. 225)
