Of this central question I fully agree.  There are purposefully in Pynchon's 
work layered arguments which resist encapsulation but which resonate almost 
as magnets when we try to unify them.  Approach-Retreat!  This is the Koan 
aspect to his writing.  Pynchon knows (and loves) koans.  Koans keep on 
giving!
