Dig into each of these of these stories and you will
discover a nightmare. 

Grumann was the engine that pulled the Long Island economy
for nearly fifty years. More people worked for Grumann and
its satellites than any other company. On the gold coast
where Pynchon grew up, engineers from Grumann and Cold
Spring Harbor (the center of US eugenics projects), many
from Germany and the Soviet Union, lived in the estates that
Fitzgerald wrote about in his fiction, up on the hills, and
of course shit rolled down hill and down stream.  Long
Island did not need to be hit by a Atom Bomb to suffer the
effects of Nuclear Fallout, it's population has, depending
on how you calculate it of course, the highest  cancer rate
in the Nation, Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer rates are
staggering. Broohaven Labs destroyed the ground water,  a
very, very fragile ecological system, and the production of
Defense products, the use of heavy metals and arsenic have
rendered the pristine suburb unfit for human habitation. The
experiments at Pilgrim and Kings Park are notorious, the
Nuke power plants at Shoram Wading River, have been
"moth-balled," a huge windfall and slush fund pay-off to the
politically connected, and I won't boor you with all the
details, so....I suspect Pynchon, a Long Islander, sent
Stencil out to Long Island because, because, because,
because, because,  Because of the wonderful things they do
out there.
