It's been dwindling over the years, but I finally made it -- I haven't
seen ANY of the Oscar-nominated films. I noticed that "O Brother Where
Art Thou?" was nominated for cinematography; I thought it should have
won, but then I didn't see any of the other films.
It must have jarred some thoughts about cinema and Gravity's Rainbow,
because this morning I remembered that Pynchon praised science fiction
in his Luddite essay for, among other things, defying the easy
manichaeism of literary vs. scientific thinkers. Now, cinema is where
EVERYTHING comes together: art & commerce, technology & imagination,
individual vision & complex collaboration -- and watching a film is a
balance of individual revery in the dark with the dynamic of a crowd at
a show. Call it a paradigm for industrial art . . .
